English Tourism Week Tours – March 15 to 24

Paul Dickson is running a selection of tours in Norwich, to mark English Tourism Week, March 15-24. The programme includes four tours celebrating the work of Victorian/Edwardian architect George Skipper, in partnership with Yalm Food Hall at the Royal Arcade, one of Skipper’s standout buildings.

English Tourism Week Tours

Wednesday, March 20 at 10am, The Pastons in Norwich, the story of the letter-writing Pastons in Norwich during the 15th and early 16th centuries, with readings from The Pastons Letters. Ticket £9.

Thursday, March 21 at 2pm, Norwich, the City of Stories, looking at writers who have written about Norwich, or lived in Norwich, along with the story of the city’s libraries and newspapers. Ticket £12 , includes tea/coffee at the Maids Head Hotel.

Friday, March 22 at 10am, Julian’s Medieval Norwich, covering the story of Julian of Norwich and her contemporaries Margery Kempe and Richard Caister, along with Norwich in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Ticket £12, includes tea/coffee at the Theatre Royal.

Saturday, March 23 at 10am, Shardlake’s Norwich, celebrating CJ Sansom’s novel Tombland and the story of Kett’s Rebellion in 1549. Ticket £12, includes tea/coffee at the Maids Head Hotel.

Saturday, March 23 at 6pm, Norwich on the Dark Side, crime, punishment, murder and riots down the ages. Ticket £9.

Yalm and Skipper Tours

Tuesday, March 19 at 6pm

This tour celebrates the architectural legacy and career of the architect George Skipper. The Royal Arcade , which marks its 125th anniversrary this year, was one of Skipper’s key projects. Writer and poet, Sir John Betjeman writing about Skipper said: “He is altogether remarkable and original. He was to Norwich what Gaudi was to Barcelona.”

The tour will look at other Skipper buildings in the City Centre including Surrey House (Aviva), the former Norwich and London Accident Insurance Association headquarters (St Giles House Hotel), Jarrold, George Skipper’s office and Commercial Chambers and Barclays Bank on Red Lion Street, before walking through the Royal Arcade and finishing the tour with a drink at Yalm.
